about

Isso = This

"Listening to This is making contact with a process.

A band that’s been playing together for more than a decade and keeps offering repertoire and a manner of playing it, a way of understanding and telling music.

Collectively, intensely.
This is perceived in the ease with which they improvise together, with an intensity and sincerity that sometimes reminds me of those bands hitting it hard and mercilessly in a garage somewhere in São Paulo, in the the early days of our glorious rock’n’roll…
And in the same way it has punch, it has disquietude. Rigour and wallop, with a certain tranquility of those familiar to diverse musical universes. Being from São Paulo has a lot to do with This: a vast array of influences circulate in their blood, and it’s plentiful, dense, fast. A megametropolitan musical experience that turbines an aesthetic engine capable of both shooting riffs and melodic motifs one against another like a rioting mob and composing shapes an parallelograms like contemporary artists.
From inside This cooking pot emerges a meticulous music created from shambles. Shambles of linear and tonal music, of pop-rock, of jazz, of post-modernity, of tradition (particularly of the rich brazilian instrumental music tradition, predominantly cantabile and folkish, solidified by many masters from Pixinguinha to Hermeto - a tradition they confront and comment on in a thousand ways).
In all, This ends up expressing an interesting kind of brazilianness. Contemporary, anguished, hyper informed, cosmopolitan - and by no means less emotional. And it tells us that lyricism can live in unusual places: in noise, in dissonance, in sustained tension. As a music that sounds as much by the clashing than by the fitting between musical elements, creating sound situations, emotional moments.
You dig where This confronts the tradition to tell us old stories in another way?
Then, when Arnaldo Antunes comes up in the middle of all This, singingspeaking “339”, it all seems natural. And it stays natural when they revisit 20th century composers such as Debussy, Ligeti, Mosolov, playing sophisticated musical writings with a typical formation from popular music: the guitar, bass and drums power trio, plus reeds and horns.
At last, having much concept and permissiveness is in the root of Projeto B’s work. A beautiful trajectory, which shows a band with repertoire to approach repertoires. Instigating our trip as listeners with their building games.
That’s what This tells me."
